Objective To investigate the effect of basic periodontal treatment combined with orthodontic treatment on the dental function of patients with chronic periodontitis combined with labial displacement of upper anterior teeth. Methods One hundred and one patients with chronic periodontitis combined with labial displacement of upper anterior teeth admitted to a hospital in Henan from January 2019 to January 2020 were selected as study subjects. The patients were divided into a control group（n=49） and an observation group（n=52） using a random number table. Patients in the control group were treated with basic periodontal therapy

while patients in the observation group were treated with orthodontic therapy on the basis of the control group. The dental function evaluation scale scores at 3 months of treatment were compared between the 2 groups; the levels of interleukin-5（IL-5）

interleukin-8（IL-8）

interleukin-1β（IL-1β）

hypersensitive C-reactive protein（hs-CRP）

tumor necrosis factor-α（t TNF-α）

periodontal pocket depth

bleeding index and clinical adhesion level were compared between the 2 groups before and at 3 months of treatment. Complications at 3 months after treatment were compared between the 2 groups. Results The scores of swallowing function

chewing function and speech function in the dental function evaluation scale of the patients in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group

and the differences were all statistically significant（P<0.05）. Before treatment

there was no statistically significant difference between the levels of IL-5

IL-8

IL-1β

hs-CRP and TNF-α in the 2 groups（P>0.05）. At 3 months after treatment

the levels of IL-5

IL-8

IL-1β

hs-CRP

and TNF-α were lower in the 2 groups than before treatment and lower in the observation group than in the control group

with statistically significant differences（P<0.05）. Before treatment

there was no statistically significant difference between the periodontal pocket depth

bleeding index

and clinical attachment level in the 2 groups（P>0.05）. At 3 months after treatment

the periodontal pocket depth

bleeding index

and clinical attachment level of the patients in the 2 groups were smaller than those before treatment and smaller in the observation group than in the control group

with statistically significant differences（P <0.05）. The total complication rate of patients in the observation group（3.84%） was lower than that in the control group（16.32%）

and the difference was statistically significant（P<0.05）. Conclusion Basic periodontal treatment combined with orthodontic treatment for patients with chronic periodontitis combined with labial displacement of upper anterior teeth can effectively improve the dental function of patients

reduce periodontal inflammation response and decrease the incidence of complications

which makes it worthy of clinical promotion.
