Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of valproic acid combined with lamotrigine on adult epilepsy and its effect on the patiens’ lamotrigine blood concentration. Methods One hundred and twenty adult epilepsy patients diagnosed and treated from January 2018 to May 2019 in a hospital in Liaoning were selected and divided into an observation group and a control group with 60 patients in each group using a random number table. Patients in the control group were treated with lamotrigine
and patients in the observation group were treated with valproic acid in combination with lamotrigine
both for 3 months. The clinical efficacy
serum index levels before and after treatment
lamotrigine blood concentration
daily dose and adverse effects were compared between the two groups. Results The total efficacy of treatment in the observation group was 91.67%(55/60)
which was higher than the 78.33%(47/60) in the control group
and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). After treatment
the blood concentration of lamotrigine in the observation group and the average daily dose were significantly higher than the baseline
and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Before treatment
the serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)
homocysteine(Hcy) and neuron-specific enolase(NSE) in the 2 groups were compared
and the differences were not statistically significant(P>0.05); after treatment
the serum levels of TNF-α
Hcy and NSE in the 2 groups were lower than those before treatment
and those in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group(P<0.05).The incidence of adverse reactions during treatment in the 2 groups was compared
and the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05). Conclusion Valproic acid combined with lamotrigine is effective in the treatment of adult epilepsy and can significantly increase the blood concentration of lamotrigine; therefore
the dose of lamotrigine should be adjusted according to the blood concentration of the patients to ensure the safety when using the drug.
