Effectiveness of acupuncture intervention on aromatase inhibitor-induced joint symptoms in breast cancer patients[J]. Journal of Southwest Medical University, 2022,45(4):344-350. DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.2096-3351.2022.04.013.
Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture as a non-pharmacological intervention for aromatase inhibitor-associated arthralgia(AIA). Methods English databases including PubMed,Cochrane Library and Chinese databases including Wanfang,CNKI,VIP,and CBM were searched. The search time limit was from the establishment of each database to March 5,2020. Quality assessment according to the Cochrance Risk of Bias Assessment Tool by two systematically trained researchers. Result This systematic review included 8 randomized controlled trials, with a total of 652 subjects, including 6 English literatures and 2 Chinese literatures. The brief pain inventory-short form (BPI-SF) was used to evaluate the effect, and the worst pain dimensions of the acupuncture group at 3 ~ 12 weeks were all reduced compared to the control group. After the third week of treatment, the worst pain in the acupuncture group was significantly reduced than the control group, with statistically significant difference [MD = -1.78,95% CI (-2.43,-1.12),P < 0.001]; after the sixth week of treatment, the worst pain in the acupuncture group was significantly reduced than the control group, and the difference is statistically significant [MD = -2.97,95% CI(-4.38,-1.55),P < 0.001]; the worst pain reduction in the acupuncture group at the 12th week far exceeded the control group, with the difference statistically significant [MD = -2.53,95% CI(-3.26,-1.80),P < 0.001]. Conclusion The AIA intervention has a good safety record and is effective in alleviating the worst pain in patients, but its role in other aspects is uncertain. It is suggested to carry out a large randomized controlled trial in China for validation.
