Autoimmune liver diseases (AILD) are chronic and progressive liver diseases related to autoimmunity. The most prevalent AILD in China are autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cholangitis. The exact etiologies of AILD remain unclear. Disruption of liver autoimmune tolerance and activated immune effector cells reducing the number or the function of anti-inflammatory regulatory T and B cells may cause continuous inflammation in the liver and consequently AILD. The two diseases have different target cells that are damaged and thus somewhat different clinical manifestations. In recent years, with further understanding of AILD, new treatments have emerged, among which B cell depletion therapy has a good effect on some refractory AILD and further study is needed.
