Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are a group of chronic relapsing gastrointestinal immune disorders with unknown etiology. Clinically, IBDs mainly include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Vitamin D receptor (VDR), a member of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily, is activated by vitamin D3 (VD3) to regulate a variety of signal pathways. Studies have shown that VDR expression in the intestine has a crucial role in the development and progression of IBDs by regulating intestinal inflammation homeostasis, intestinal epithelial barrier function, intestinal immune response, and gut microbiota. Clinically, dietary supplementation with VD can improve patients’ quality of life and reduce the recurrence rate of IBDs. Therefore, basic research on the VD/VDR pathway and IBDs has important clinical values.
