Objective: To investigate the characteristics of drug poisoning in children in the Second People’s Hospital of Anhui Wuhu (hereinafter referred to as “our hospital”)
and to explore the entry point of pharmaceutical care. Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on clinical data of 36 cases of drug poisoning in our hospital from 2020 to 2021
and questionnaire survey for 40 children’s parents (hospitalized in the pediatric ward during the same period) was conducted to investigate the general information of drug poisoning in children in our hospital and the distribution of drug categories. Parents were enrolled to investigate the risk factors of drug poisoning and value of pharmaceutical care. Results: The age of 36 cases of drug poisoning in our hospital was mainly concentrated in the >1 to 3 years group (33.33%) and >3 to 6 years group (30.56%). The main drugs were antihypertensive drugs (25.64%)
common cold drugs (10.26%)
rodenticides (10.26%) pesticide (10.26%) and vitamin preparations (10.26%) and antipsychotics (7.69%). The survey revealed a low rate of availability and effective use of drug kits
haphazard storage of medicines in the home
lack of knowledge of pre-hospital emergency care
and an urgent need for related pharmaceutical care. Conclusion: Children’s drug poisoning is mostly related to commonly used drugs at home
and all of them are improperly placed
and there is an urgent need for pharmacists to be trained in safety promotion and pre-hospital first aid.
