Objective:To study the MVD and the expression of VEGF

Flt-1 in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Methods:Immunohistochemical staining (S-P) was used to examine MVD and the expression of VEGF

Flt-1 in 37 cases of BPH and 6 cases of normal prostate (NP).Results:VEGF expression was negative in all 6 NP;the positive rate of VEGF in 37 BPH was 78.4%.Statistical significance existed between the two groups ( P <0.05).The expression of Flt-1 were positive in two groups

and no statistical significance existed ( P >O. 05).MVD parameter was 4.83±1.83 in NP and 8.00±3.28 in BPH

while statistical significance existed between the two groups ( P <0.05).In BPH

the expression of VEGF correlated to both MVD and Flt-1 ( P <0.05)

and Flt-1 did not correlate to MVD ( P >05).There was no correlation between the size of prostate and MVD and the expression of both VEGF and Flt-1 in BPH ( P >0.05).Conclusion:In the progress of benign prostatic hyperplasia

the expression of VEGF and angiogenesis are significantly developed.VEGF palys a necessary role in pathogenesis and development of BPH

but Flt-1 is a less important factor.
