Objective:To evaluate expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in urinary cytology and possibility of VEGF as a marker for diagnosis of bladder cancer. Methods: The expression of VEGF in urinary cytology by immunohistochemical staining was examined in 40 cases of transitional cell bladder carcinoma and 20 subjects with normal urothelium. Results: The positive staining of VEGF in 40 patients with bladder cancer were 40%
the expression of VEGF was negative in all controls. It was revealed that the expression of VEGF was significantly higher in recurrent lesions(70%) than in the primary cases(30%). There was also a significant difference in the expression of VEGF between those with infiltrative lesions and the superficial ones. Conclusion: The findings suggest that VEGF in urinary cytology can be used as a valuable marker for diagnosis of bladder cancer.
