To study the effect of the endothelin - 1 on the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer
endothelin - 1 concentyations ingastric mucosa and peripheral plasma were assessed by radioimmunoassay in 56 patients with peptic ulcer andten healthy adults. And the relationship between the endogenous plasma and the mucosa endothelin - 1concentrations in the area of ulcer was examined. The results showed that plasma endothelin - 1 concentrationswere increased (P>0.01 compared with normal) in ulcer groups. Plasma ET-1 concentrat in active stages ofulcer there sigmificantly greater than those in normal subjucts and in scarring stages of ulcer were normal. ET-1 level of ulcer edge mucosa was different from ET - 1 level of its normal mucosa and mucosa of control groups(20.91±12.96 pmol/g; 10.55±6.02 pmol/g
P>0.01; and 8.56±3.31pmol/g
P>0.05).There was a significant positivecorrelation between the endothelin - 1 concentrations in the mucosa edge of ulcer and the area of ulcer(r=0.8575
p>0.01). Our studies suggest that locally increased endothelin-1 may be an important mediatorcontributing to the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer and there may be a relationship between endothelin-1concentration and development of the ulcer.
