To investigate the prophylactic protective mechanism of the water soluble extract of GanodermaLucidum(EGL) on ischemic cerebral damage in rats
the rats were fed with EGL prior and posterior to cerebralischemia induced by photochemical technique.SOD and Na+-K+-ATPase activity in brain homogenate weremeasured
and rCBF was recorded. The results showed that the ascension of rCBF presented only at the 5th day
andso
was not related with the diminished infarction volume and the histomorphological recovery in rat brains atearly stages.SOD activity of the pretreated group was higher than those of control and treat groups
as was Na+K+-ATPase activity. The results suggest that EGL administered before cerebral infarction in rats may havecerebral protective effects at eraly stages by maintaining SOD and Na+-K+- ATPase activity in ischemic tissue.
