Objective:To perform a dosimetric comparison of electronic tissue compensation(eComp)and three-dimensional radiotherapy(3 DCRT)in whole breast irradiation for early-stage breast cancer patients. Methods:Sixty patients who were treated at our institution were selected for this study. 3 DCRT and eComp planning techniques were used to generate treatment plans for all patients
respectively. The radiotherapy planning effectiveness including process timing
monitor unit
target volume coverage and dosimetric difference of critical organs doses between 3 DCRT and eComp were compared. Results:On the average
eComp treatment planning process was about 10 minutes longer than 3 DCRT plans. The mean numbers of monitor units required to deliver the 3 DCRT and eComp were(300±12)MUs and(302±11)MUs
respectively(P=0.059). The PTV coverage between 3 DCRT and eComp plans was similar. eComp plans delivered lower doses to lung
heart and skin in comparison to their corresponding 3 DCRT plans. Conclusion:eComp technique leads to improved dose of lung
heart and skin without compromising of the targets dose coverage.
