Objective:To explore the relationship between the diameter of trachea stenosis and the prognosis in patients with pul-monary artery sling(PAS). Methods:From October 2011 to July 2015
twenty-nine patients were identified as PAS at Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. The clinical data
examination of multi-detector computed tomography scan
treatment and outcome were retrospectively reviewed. Results:Twenty-nine cases diagnosed as PAS with the age ranging from 2 to 57 months(median age=6 months)at diagnosis. Most cases had the symptom of recurrent wheezing and stridor. Twenty-seven patients underwent multi-detector CT vascular and airway reconstruction which indentified the diagnosis of PAS and airway malformation
another two patients who diagnosed by echocardiography only underwent multi-detector CT airway reconstruction test. Eleven patients out of 29 patients were dead. Gender
age
type of airway abnormality and combined cardiovascular malformations were not significantly associated with death(P =1.000
0.063
0.696
0.671
respectively). The mortality of patients with type 1 airway malformation was higher than the mortality of patients with type 2 airway malformation
without statistical significances(45.5% vs. 33.3%
P=0.696). Compared with those of survivor group
the transverse diameter and vertical diameter of tracheal stenosis were significantly shorter in death group[(2.75 ± 0.56)mm vs.(3.37 ± 0.45)mm
(2.26 ± 0.35)mm vs.(2.70 ± 0.49)mm
P=0.003
0.015
respectively]. Fifteen cases were treated with surgery
and 5 cases were dead. Compared with those of surgical survivor group
the transverse diameter and vertical diameter of tracheal stenosis were shorter in surgical death group[(2.85 ± 0.80)mm vs.(3.42 ± 0.29)mm
(2.40 ± 0.50)mm vs.(2.80 ± 0.36)mm]
without statistical significances(P=0.188
0.096
respectively). Conclusion:The diameter of the tracheal stenosis in the survivor group with PAS is significantly larger than that in the death group. The degree of tracheal stenosis may be the key to impact the prognosis of the patients with PAS.
