Objective To explore the application of failure modes and effects analysis（FMEA） in the management of doctors’ work intensity in surgery-related departments. Methods A total of 123 doctors from surgery-related departments of a general hospital in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region were selected as the research sub-jects. Through the risk analysis of the FMEA team and investigation of the factors affecting the increase in the work intensity of doctors in the surgery-related departments of the hospital

various potential risk factors were e-valuated in terms of severity

occurrence and detection

so as to calculate the risk priority number（RPN） of these risk factors for risk identification. Results Combining the severity

occurence

detection and RPN of the risk factors for increased work intensity of doctors in surgery-related departments and in combination of the upper quartile

8 potential high-risk factors were finally found（RPN >200 points）

which were: sudden emergency rescue or surgery during working hours; frequent overtime work

frequent night shifts

continuous work after night shift and insufficient rest; emergency rescue or surgery during non-working hours; physical or psychologi-cal exhaustion caused by surgery; lack of occupational safety; delayed operation; large workload of doctor-patient communication; the medical records not completed on time. Conclusion FMEA can effectively identify high-risk factors for the increase in work intensity of doctors in surgery-related departments

and help propose targeted measures based on them

so as to reduce or eliminate potential safety hazards in the medical process and ensure patient safety.
