Objective To investigate the needs for community mental health services of residents in Dongguan

the level of their positive psychological capital and the relationship between them

so as to provide a scientific basis for further promoting the community mental health service system in Dongguan.Methods A survey engaging538 community residents in Dongguan was conducted using the Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire（PPQ）and the questionnaire for community residents′needs of community mental health services

and the results were analyzed statistically.Results The residents who are willing to turn to professionals for help when psychological problems occur only account for 15.61%

far lower than those who seek aids from relatives and friends（47.59%）;15.06% of the residents chose to solve the problems by themselves.50.19%

55.20% and52.04% of the residents chose interpersonal relationships

emotional distress and work stress.Only 41.64% of residents indicated that they had a counselor in their community.In addition

the scores of resilience dimensions of residents with different education levels were statistically significant（P<0.05）.The resilience scores of undergraduate and above were lower than those with high school degree and below（P<0.05）.The differences of PPQ

self-efficacy and optimistic dimension of residents in different community types were statistically significant（P<0.05）.The scores of PPQ

self-efficacy and optimistic dimension of rural community residents were lower than those of urban residents（P<0.05）

and the scores of PPQ and optimistic dimensions of rural residents were lower than those of suburban residents as well（P<0.05）.The scores of PPQ and its dimensions of hope and optimism of the residents in communities with psychological counselors were higher than those of the community residents without psychological counselors（P<0.05）.Logistic regression showed that people with low psychological capital were more inclined to choose to solve the problem by themselves when they encountered psychological problems.This tendency was 2.71 times higher than that of people with high psychological capital（P <0.05）;men also preferred to solve it themselves.This tendency was 2.86 times that of women（P<0.05）.Conclusion There is a strong demand for mental health services among community residents in Dongguan.There is also a certain relationship between the positive psychological capital level of community residents and the establishment of community mental health services.It is extremely urgent to establish a mental health service system.Moreover

community residents in Dongguan have their own preferences for mental health services

and community mental health service agencies should provide services according to the actual needs of residents.
