Objective To investigate the current status of co-morbidities in hypertensive patients
which may provide evidence for the management of hypertension. Methods Data from 33 939 individuals who received routine health check-up at a tertiary hospital in Sichuan Province throughout 2015 were included in our study. The health check-up conclusions were extracted from these health check-up records for statistical analysis. Results A total of 5 324 hypertensive patients were identified;of these
314(5.9%)did not have any co-morbidity
1 083(20.3%)had two comorbidities
1 186(22.3%)had three co-morbidities
and 1 084(20.4%)had four co-morbidities.The most common co-morbidities in hypertensive patients included dyslipidemia(70.2%)
abdominal obesity(57.9%)and fatty liver(35.5%).The number of co-morbidities in hypertensive patients varied significantly with gender and age(P<0.05)
the prevalence of hypertension without other diseases in female was higher than male;the prevalence of hypertension without other diseases in younger than 35 years old and those aged 35 to 44 years old was higher than other age groups. The Logistic regression analysis showed that
all of these co-morbidities(except abnormal liver function)played a role in the development of hypertension(P<0.05).Conclusion Co-morbidities are common in hypertensive patients
especially in male and older patients. Thus
comprehensive management of various co-morbidities is an essential part in the management of hypertension
so as to effectively control blood pressure and prevent the development and progression of complications.
