Anatomical basis and clinical application of sheath repair in acute closed Achilles tendon ruptures
Objective To observe the anatomical morphology and blood supply of Achilles tendon sheath
and to provide anatomic data for sheath repair in acute closed Achilles tendon ruptures. Methods The anatomic features of the sheath and blood vessels of the Achilles tendon were observed by 10 fresh frozen lower leg specimens perfused with latex. Results The outer fascial sheath and inner synovial sheath of the Achilles tendon have abundant blood supply
and there are gaps between the fascial sheath and synovial sheath
and between the synovial sheath and the Achilles tendon
which can be completely stripped. Conclusion Both of the fascia sheath and the synovial sheath are important anatomical structures of blood supply for Achilles tendon. Acute closed Achilles tendon rupture requires the protection and repair of the fascial sheath and synovial sheath during clinical surgery.
