Abstract
Eleven cases of fulminant amebic dysentery (FAD) were reported. The incidence of FAD among 602 cases of amebic dysentery seen over the past 26 years was 1.8%. 9cases were more than 50 years of age. Mortality of this group of 11 cases of FAD was 63.6%. Onset of the disease was sudden in 6 cases. Typical symptoms and signs included severe and fre quent diarrhea
fever
abdominal pain and distension
dehydration
loss of consciousness
and shock. The stool contained blood in most cases odor with characteristic foul. Malnutrition
was considered to be a predisposing factor. Suspicious cases should have their stool examined for E. histolytica tropho-zoites. Effective antiamebic therapy should bs instituted instantaneously to decrease the mortality of FAD.
