The therapeutic results of 76 randomised outpatients with endoscopically proven gastric ulcers (60 patients with gastric ulcers and 16 with gastric ulcers combined duodenal ulcers) treated with Mixtura Bismuthi (MB) or Mixtura Bismuthi Compo-sita (MBC) for 6 weeks were compared.Clinical and endoscopic assessments were made at the commencement and completion of the therapy. In the gastric ulcer group

complete healing resulted in 26 out of 30 on MB treatment(86.7%) as compared with 24 out of 30(80%) on MBC trea-tment(P>0.05). In the combined ulcer group

complete healing resulted in 6 out of 8(75%) on MB as compared with 5 out of 8(62.5%) On MBC (P>0.05).Comparison of the pain-releaf weeks in the MB amd MBC therapies showed no significant difference (P>0.05). No adverse reaction or altered renal function was observed. The blood bismuth levels after 6 weeks of treatment remained within safety limits.This study indicates that for gastric ulcer as well as for combined ulcer treatment with MB is as effective as with MBC

and MB is superior in that it is easier to manufacture and much stable for storage.
