Mental illness is a disorder in which functional brain activity is disturbed under the influence of various biological
psychological
and social environments
resulting in varying degrees of impairment in mental activities such as cognition
emotion
consciousness
and behavior. The main manifestations of mental illness include decreased social and work abilities
decreased physical functioning
and decreased self-care. There are various social misconceptions and prejudices about mental illness
especially in the area of marriage and childbearing
such as schizophrenia cannot be married
much less have children
and cured patients have to stop medication for more than 2 years before they can have children. These issues largely violate the basic rights of patients as human beings
i.e.
ethical and legal ones
and also involve many professional issues
eugenics-related issues
etc. Therefore
a comprehensive understanding of the marital and reproductive status of patients with mental illness and the correction of prejudices with research results and facts have clear practical implications for both patients and society. As previous literature has focused more on schizophrenia and affective disorders
this study mainly focuses on issues related to marriage and childbearing in patients with schizophrenia and affective disorders
providing references for guidelines on marriage and childbearing in patients with mental illness.
