Objective To investigate the levels of serum advanced glycosylation end products(AGES) in elderly hypertensive patients and their correlation with cognitive dysfunction. Methods Sixty-two elderly hypertensive patients admitted to a Center in Henan Province from October 2017 to October 2019 were selected as study subjects
and the patients were divided into cognitive impairment group(n=14) and cognitive normal group(n=48) using the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE).General clinical data were recorded
blood pressure
lipids and AGEs levels were compared between the two groups
and the correlation between AGEs levels and cognitive impairment was analyzed. Results The levels of triglycerides(TG) in the cognitively normal group were higher than those in the cognitively impaired group
while the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) and AGEs were lower than those in the cognitively impaired group
and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05);the differences were not statistically significant when comparing the levels of fasting plasma glucose(FPG)
total cholesterol(TC)
systolic blood pressure(SBP) and diastolic blood pressure(DBP)in the two groups(P>0.05);Logistic regression analysis revealed that age ≥75 years
education level of elementary school or below
and AGEs ≥10.56 p/(mg·L) were risk factors affecting cognitive function in elderly hypertensive patients(P<0.05).Conclusion Elevated levels of serum AGEs in elderly hypertensive patients may be one of the risk factors for their cognitive dysfunction and should be closely monitored.
