Objective To investigate the effects of disease perception and empowerment in patients with type 2 diabetes on their quality of life. Methods Using the convenience sampling method
320 patients with type 2 diabetes who were treated in a tertiary hospital and a community health service center in Yanji from April to June 2019 were selected as the study subjects
and they were surveyed using the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire(BIPQ)
the Chinese version of the Diabetes Empowerment Scale Short Form(C-DES-SF)
the Diabetes-specific Quality of Life Scale(DSQOL) and the General Demographic Data Questionnaire. Results The mean values of the total scores in BIPQ
C-DES-SF and DSQOL were 54.12±6.53
3.63 ±0.61
and 118.86 ±19.36
respectively.Correlation analysis showed that the total empowerment score of the study subjects was positively correlated with illness perception(r=0.289
P<0.05);while the total empowerment score
the total illness perception score and its cognitive repre sentation dimension
emotional representation dimension
and illness comprehension dimension were all negatively correlated with quality of life(r=-0.322
-0.454
-0.387
-0.309
-0.424)(P<0.05).Stratified regression analysis revealed that the explanatory power of general demographic characteristics to explain the cause of total change in quality-of-life scores was 9.4 %;when controlling for general demographic characteristics
the regression model for disease perception predicting quality of life was statistically significant(F=24.381
P<0.001)
and its explanatory power increased from 9.4% to 31.9%
On the basis of the above variables
the regression model of empowerment to predict quality of life was also statistically significant(F=28.119
P<0.001)
and its model power increased by another 9.3 %.Conclusion The qualityof-life scores of middle-aged and elderly patients with type 2 diabetes are relatively low in general
and the level of patients’ empowerment and disease perception directly affects their coping style with the disease and its development
regression and prevention.
