Objective To explore the efficacy of inhaled budesonide in treating mycoplasma pneumoniae(MP)pneumonia and its effect on immunoglobulin levels in children. Methods From January 2013 to January 2015
a total of 84 children with MP pneumonia were recruited and randomized into either the trial group(n=42)or the control group(n=42).Children in the control group received intravenous azithromycin alone
while those in the trial group received intravenous azithromycin plus inhaled budesonide. The overall response rate and the serum levels of immunoglobulins(IgG
IgM and IgA)were compared between the two groups. Results The overall response rate was significantly higher in the trial group than that in the control group(P<0.05).Before treatment
the serum levels of IgG
IgM and IgA were comparable between the two groups(P>0.05).After treatment
the IgG and IgA levels in both groups were significantly lowered compared with those before treatment(P<0.05);The IgG and IgA levels in the trial group were significantly lower than those in the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion The addition of inhaled budesonide to intravenous azithromycin has favorable efficacy in treating children with MP pneumonia
which may also improve their immunoglobulin levels. These findings may have important implications for our clinical practice.
