Objective To investigate the anxiety and depression in middle school students of Grade 7and Grade9 in Beibei District of Chongqing Municipality and to compare the differences of anxiety and depression detection rates in gender and grade.Method 308 students of Grade 7and Grade 9from two middle schools in Beibei District were selected to do anxiety and depression self-rating scale and the results were statistically analyzed.Results The detection rate of anxiety was 31.49% and the detection rate of depression was 43.51%.There was no statistical difference between genders in the total anxiety scores.The difference between genders in the total depression scores was statistically significant（P<0.05）

and the total depression scores of boys was higher than girls.There was no statistical difference between grades in the total anxiety scores.There was no statistical difference between grades in the total depression scores.Conclusion Middle school students have a higher detection rate of anxiety and depression

which needs early intervention.
