Objective To observe the curative effect of applying breath training device in respiratory function exercise before surgery on reducing pulmonary complications after abdominal surgery and to provide a basis for necessary breath training before surgery.Method 130cases of patients undergoing abdominal surgery were divided into two groups randomly.Patients in function training group had breath training with breath training device before surgery and those in control group were not trained

and pulmonary complications after surgery were compared.Results Incidence rate of pulmonary infection and second intubation in the function training group trained with breath training device was 3.8%

that in control group was 30.8%and 25.0%respectively

and the differences were statistically significant（p<0.05）.Conclusion Training method with breath training device is a simple and effective method which can improve breath function of patients before surgery and reduce peri-surgical risk and pulmonary complications after surgery.
