Objective To have knowledge about the liver function of freshmen so as to take preventive measures when necessary.Method A test for determining alanine aminotransferase（ALT）using enzyme kinetic. Freshmen with abnormity were further examined to determine the cause

and the result was analyzed statistically.Results Among the 10 902freshmen examined

detection rate of abnormal ALT was 0.23%.Detection rate of abnormal ALT in the male and female was 0.36%and 0.04%respectively

and the differences were statistically significant（p<0.05）.Among the 25cases with abnormal ALT

there were 20cases diagnosed with hepatitis B.Conclusion Abnormal rate of ALT in male students is higher than female students.Hepatitis B is the major cause of abnormal liver function.Strengthening management for students with abnormal ALT and enhancing their preventive and health care awareness are important measures for preventing and controlling hepatitis B.
