A novel mixed-mode stationary phase used for the determination of phthalates in nail polish
Objective To develop an analytical method using a novel synthesized stationary phase (named Sil-styrene) for filling the chromatographic column, and apply it to detect phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in nail polish using a mixed-mode high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) approach. Methods The chromatographic conditions were as follows: the column was prepared by filling the empty column using synthetic Sil-styrene,the mobile phase was acetonitrile/ultrapure water (43/57),the detection wave length was 240 nm,the velocity of flow was 1.0 mL/min,the column temperature was 35 ℃,and the sample volume was 20 μL. Results Under the experimental method, the new column has a good linear relationship (R2 > 0.999) with concentration range of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and diiso-butyl phthalate (DIBP) standard solution from 0.125 to 7.5 mg/L. The method has qualified precision and accuracy, DBP and DIBP can be detected in the commercially available nail polish. Conclusion The newly developed mixed-mode chromato⁃ graphic column showed high sensitivity in detecting DBP and DIBP in real nail polish samples. It also exhibited faster separation effi⁃ ciency compared to traditional C18 chromatographic columns.
