Mechanism of epigenetic regulation of vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease
Vascular calcification is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events in patients with chronic kidney disease. The pathological process of vascular calcification involves active, multifactorial regulation and cell-mediated ectopic deposition of cal⁃ cium salts. It has been suggested that the trans-differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells from a contractile to an osteoblast pheno⁃ type is a key molecular event in the development of vascular calcification. Epigenetic modifications, including DNA methylation, histone modification, and non-coding RNA regulation, play an important role in regulating gene expression without altering the DNA coding se⁃ quence and are involved in the development of various diseases. Recent research has indicated that epigenetic modifications can regu⁃ late the trans-differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells and participate in the regulation of vascular calcification. Therefore, from the perspective of epigenetics, this article reviewed the mechanisms of DNA methylation, histone modification and non-coding RNA in epigenetic regulation of vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease, providing a new target for clinical treatment and prevention of vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease..
