Analysis of the efficacy of bronchial artery embolization in the treatment of massive hemoptysis
Objective To evaluate the efficacy of bronchial artery embolization in the treatment of massive hemoptysis. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data and treatment of 161 patients who underwent bronchial artery embolization (BAE) for massive hemoptysis at Pingliang Second People’s Hospital
Guiyang Guizhou International Hospital
and the Second Clinical Medical College of North Sichuan Medical College from January 2021 to June 2022
and the effectiveness of BAE was analyzed. Results Of the 161 patients
98 were male and 63 were female
with an age range of 23 to 89 years and an average age of 56.4 years. There were a total of 263 embolized vessels
including 172 bronchial arteries (bronchialartery
BA)
14 ectopic bronchial arteries and 77 non-bronchial somatic arteries (such as intercostal artery
internal thoracic artery
lateral thoracic artery
nail cervical trunk
costal cervical trunk
proper esophageal artery
etc.). All patients completed embolization
hemoptysis disappeared or alleviated after embolization
and the total effective rate was 100%. Within 3 months after embolization
there were 16 cases of recurrent massive hemoptysis
resulting in a recurrence rate of 9.94%. Five cases (3.11%) experienced severe adverse reactions
with spinal cord injury being the main complication. Conclusion BAE was an effective treatment for massive hemoptysis caused by various reasons
with a low incidence of complications. It could be utilized as a clinical approach for managing massive hemoptysis.
