Application of bile acid metabolomics based on mass spectrometry technology in hepatobiliary diseases
Bile acids, the main end-products of cholesterol metabolism in the liver, have recently been dem⁃onstrated as important signaling molecules that regulate lipid metabolism, energy expenditure and glucose homeosta⁃sis. Alterations in bile acid homeostasis and bile acid-mediated signaling pathways may affect hepatic metabolic ho⁃meostasis and cause the onset of hepatobiliary diseases. Advanced mass spectrometry,in combination with multivar⁃iate statistical methods, provides a promising approach to early diagnosis, targeted therapy, and prognosis evalua⁃tion of hepatobiliary diseases. This article briefly introduces mass spectrometry-based bile acid metabolomics and dataset analysis methods, and focuses on specific metabolic markers found by this technique that may be used for early diagnosis and treatment in several common hepatobiliary diseases, aiming to provide a new theoretical basis for precise care of hepatobiliary diseases.
