Pharmacoeconomic Evaluation of Lamotrigine and Sodium Valproate in the Treatment of Epilepsy
OBJECTIVE: To compare the pharmacoeconomics between lamotrigine and sodium valproate in the treatment of epilepsy. METHODS: Totally 100 patients with epilepsy admitted into the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University from Jun. 2017 to Jun. 2018 were extracted to be divided into the lamotrigine group and sodium valproate group via different medication method
with 50 cases in each group. Lamotrigine group was treated with oral lamotrigine of 100-300 mg/d
and sodium valproate group received oral sodium valerodine of 500-1 500 mg/d
both groups were treated for 12 months. The clinical efficacy
treatment cost and cost-effectiveness( C/E) of two groups were compared
and sensitivity analysis was performed. RESULTS:( 1) The total effective rate of the lamotrigine group was 98. 0%( 49/50)
significantly higher than the 86. 0%( 43/50) of the valproate group; the incidence of adverse drug reactions in the lamotrigine group was 4. 0%( 2/50)
significantly lower than the 14. 0%( 7/50) of the valproate group
with statistically significant differences( P<0. 05).( 2) The total cost and drug cost of the lamotrigine group were significantly higher than that of the valproate group
and the cost of laboratory examination and ADR treatment were significantly lower than that of the valproate group
with statistically significant differences( P<0. 05). The outpatient cost of lamotrigine group was lower than that of valproate group
yet the difference was not statistically significant( P > 0. 05).( 3) There were no significant differences in the C/E between two groups( P >0. 05).( 4) Sensitivity analysis showed that the C/E in the lamotrigine group were slightly lower than that in the valproate group
yet the difference was not statistically significant( P > 0. 05). CONCLUSIONS: The C/E of lamotrigine is similar to that of sodium valproate in the treatment of epilepsy. However
lamotrigine has better curative effect
fewer adverse drug reactions
and more in line with the development trend of medication.
