Manifestations and differential diagnosis of occipital diploic vein pool by CT scaning
Objective:To evaluate the features of vein pool of occipital diploe by CT scaning. Methods:The CT features of occipital diploic vein pool were analyzed retrospectively. Results:Of the 30 patients
13 were males and 17 females
their ages ranging from 38 to 78 years
with the average of 62.The vein pool of occipital diploe were located in or beside internal occipital protuberance. The CT imaging found chiseled bone destruction with the size from 2 mm×2.5 mm to 6 mm×10 mm
smooth edge and a thin layer of bone sclerosis
in 2 or more patients. The fusion could be found in all destruction of bone
with minority solitary bony defect found aroud it in 9 patients.Exoccipital and inoccipital bone showed balloon-like expansion to varying degrees
with compressed bone destruction of inoccipital bone found in 24 patients. No soft-tissue masses in occiput and posterior cranial fossa were found in all patients. The studies cases may be misdiagnosed as pathological destruction of bone
such as eosinophilic granuloma
epidermoid cyst
skull metastasis
even pacchionian impressions. Conclusion:CT can clearly demonstrate the occipital diploic vein pool
