Cross-sensitization between the prostate and bladder associated with prostatitis
Objective: To investigate the effects of noxious stimulation of the prostate on urinary bladder function in rats. Materials and Methods: a total of 18 rats were randomly assigned to completion Freund adjuvant(CFA)group
saline control and sham operation group. To examine mechanical sensitivity of the bladder
conscious filling cystometry was performed twice(before and after CFA injection into the prostate). Results: With the use of cystometry
prostatic irritation shortened mean micturition interval(P<0.05)
decreased Mean volume threshold inducing micturition
increased baseline pressure and threshold pressure (P <0.05)
but lowered peak micturition pressure compared to controls (P<0.01). Conclusion: These findings suggest that bladder-prostate cross-sensitization may play a role in voiding dysfunction associated with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome.
