The clinical study of topiramate on Tourette’s syndrome
Objective:To observe the efficacy and side effects of Topiramate(TPM) on children with Tourette’s syndrome(TS).Methods:112 children with Tourcttc’s syndrome (TS) were randomly divided into two groups
namely the routine group and control group.56patients of routine group were treated with Topiramate
while the others in control group were treated with haloperidol.Patients in the former group took Topiramte 1~2mg/(kg·d) twice per day while those of the latter group took haloperidol 1~6mg/d twice or three times per day.The patients were assessed by regular return visits every month during the period of receiving trcatment. Results:The efficacy rates of two groups were 83.92% and 80.35% respectively with no significant differences found between two groups(x~2=0.061 P>0.05).However there existed great differences in their side effects(x~2=49.863 P<0.0001).Conclusion:The study indicates that both Topiramatc and haloperidol are effective in treating Tourette’s syndrome. However as far as the side effects are concerned
the Topirimate is more efficient than haloperidol for alleviating the complications.
