A primary observation of therapeutic effect of dihydroartemisinin on experimental rats infected with Pneumocystis carinii
Objective-.To study the therapeutic effect of dihydroartemisinin(DHA)on experimental rats infect- ed with Pneumocystis carinii. Methods :Wistar rat model of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) was estab- lished by subcutaneous injection with cortisone acetate and treated orally with dihydroarteminsinin. PCP rats and normal rats served as control. The therapeutic effect of DHA was evaluated by rat survival numbers
survival rate
lung weight
ratio of lung weight to body weight
cyst count and pathological changes. Results :Rat survival numbers
survival rate in the treatment group were much higher than that in the infection group
but lower than in the normal group. Average lung weight
average ratio of lung weight to body weight and cyst numbers in the treatment group were lower than in the infection group. Lung inflammation remarkably lightened in the treat- ment group. Conclusion :DHA was one of the useful drugs to treat PCP.
