Analysis of thyroid function of patients with bipolar disorder
Objective:To explore the thyroid function of patients with bipolar disorder mania/hypomania episode
depressive episode and mixed episode. Methods :Chemiluminescence immunoassay was used to test the serum thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH)
free triiodothyronine(FT3)
serum free thyroxine(FT4)
triiodothyronine(T3) and thyroxine(T4) level in 62 bipolar mania/hypomania episode patients
71 depressive episode patients
26 mixed episode patients and 203 normal controls. Experimental group and normal controls group were collected from the University-Town hospital of Chongqing Medical University. Results:Compared with that in the control group
TSH level was significantly lower[1.650(0.803
2.400)vs. 2.100(1.610
3.030)
P<0.01] and FT4 level was significantly higher[18.420(15.530
20.060)vs. 16.600(14.890
17.640)
P<0.01] in the bipolar mania/hypomania patients. T3 and T4 levels were significantly lower[1.580(1.180
1.890)vs. 1.770(1.610
1.990)
84.170(62.540
97.940)vs. 95.54(86.020
109.500)
P<0.01] in the depression episode patients
T3 level was significantly lower [1.440(1.273
1.783) vs. 1.770(1.610
1.990)
P <0.01] in the mixed episode patients than that in the control group. The T4
FT4 levels were significantly higher[96.39(76.768
123.040)vs. 84.170(62.540
97.940)
18.420(15.530
20.060)vs. 16.520(13.670
19.080)
P<0.05] in mania/hypomania episode patients than in depression episode patients. TSH levels in serum of bipolar patients with a family history was higher(1.786±1.3601 vs. 2.229±1.7511
P<0.05)than that of patients without a family history;T3 and T4 level were lower in women with bipolar disorder than in normal patients(1.362±0.674 vs. 1.769±0.290
78.407±39.180 vs. 96.396±22.635
P=0.000). Conclusion:Thyroid function is abnormal when bipolar depressive episode
manic
mixed attack happens
but the abnormity of each are not identical.
