Properties of polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine electrostatic spinning nanofiber as new wound dressing
Objective:To prepare polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine(PVP-I2)electrostatic spinning nanofiber and to evaluate its properties as new-type wound dressing. Methods:Electrostatic spinning nanofiber was prepared using PVP as carrier and I2 as model drug. The optimal formulation and technological conditions were screened using spinnability of solution
spinning nanofiber speed and morphology as index. The morphology and formation of the nanofiber was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier infrared spectrometer. The model drug loading amount was investigated by UV spectrophotometer. The antibacterial effects on staphylococcus aureus
escherichia coli
pseudomonas aeruginosa
streptococcus pneumonia
the permeability property and the animal wound dressing capabilities of PVP-I2 electrostatic spinning nanofiber were also investigated. Results:The optimal formulation was as follows:spinning solution was 40% PVP and 30% I2
the electrostatic spinning voltage was 15 k V
the flow velocity was 0.3 ml/h
the receive distance was 15 cm. The prepared electrostatic spinning nanofiber had smooth surface and uniform structure. The nanofiber exhibited significantly antibacterial effect of staphylococcus aureus
escherichia coli
pseudomonas aeruginosa
streptococcus pneumonia. The permeability property of the nanofiber was better than that of non-woven cloth(P=0.005). The nanofiber accelerated the rate of wound dressing compared with other groups. Conclusion:Prepared PVP-I2 electrostatic spinning nanofiber loads drug uniformly and has good antibacterial action and permeability. The results suggest that the PVP-I2 electrostatic spinning nanofiber might be a potential new type of wound dressing in clinics.
