Zirconium with plasma immersion ion implantation enhances the cytocompatibility of polyether ether ketone materials
Zirconium ions were implanted into the polyether ether ketone (PEEK)materials by plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII),to preliminarily evaluatethe cytocompatibility of this material with human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs).
Methods
2
The PEEK specimens modified by PIII were used as the modification group, and the unmodified specimens were used as the control group, and then co-cultured with HGFs in vitro. The surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy, the cell morphology was analyzed under a microscope, and the cell proliferation rate was determined by CCK-8 to evaluate the biocompatibility of the material.
Results
2
Zirconium ions with PIII implantation could successfully construct a modified layer on the surface of PEEK materials. After cultured for 4 hours, the surface of both groups of specimens had HGFs spreading, and the cells in the modified group were spread better, with longer cell morphology and more pseudopodia. After cultured for 3 days, 5 days and 7 days, the cell absorbance values of surface in the modified group were higher than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (
P
<
0.05).
Conclusion
2
The surface of PEEK materials can be successfully modified with zirconium implantation by PIII,and the zirconia nanostructure on the surface of the material can promote the adhesion and proliferation of HGFs, which is conducive to soft tissue adhesion.
