From June 1979 to April 1984

65 cases of Amenbrrhea-Galactorrhea Syndrome Were found among the 334 cases of secondory amenorrhea treated in the gynecologic endocrinlogy clinicin the First Hospital of the Chongqing Medical College.Of these 65 cases

50 have been proved to have pituitary adenoma

4 with history of having taken oral contraceptives

2 were patients with postpartum galactorrhea and in 9 the causes of amenorrhea were unknown. Concentrations of serum estradiol and progesterone by radio immunoassay (RIA) were obtained in 32 patients

showing that the serum estradiol levels were approaching the lowest found usu- ally in the normal follicular phase

with no evidence of ovulation. Fifty eight patients were tested for serum prolactin (PRL) by RIA

hyperprolactinemia (PRL 30ng/ml) was found in 42 patients

among whom 38 have been found to have pituitary adenoma. Of all the 50 cases of pituitary adenoma

the diagnoses were confirmed by hypocycloidal tomography of the sella

and in 38 cases also by intravenous sinus venography.Sixteen of the 50 cases of micradenomas (<1cm) were primarily suspected by hypocycloidal tomography

later diagnosed by the use of intravenous sinus venography and finally confirmed by operation.Our present article lays stress on the significance of RIA of PRL and hypocycloidal tomography of the sella and intravenous sinus venography in the early diagnosis of pituitary adenoma. Thirty four patients with pituitary adenoma were treated by transsphenoidal removal

with or without postoperative Coocirradiation

and bromocriptine and 11 patients were treated with bromocriptine alone.Twenty eight eases have Been followed after treatment

menstruation retu- rned in 22

of whom 11 became pregnant

and galactorrhea ceased in 18.
