THE INVESTIGATION OF BENZENE EFFECT ON LEUKOCYTE SYSTEM
Hemalotogical studies consisting of leukocytic count (total and differential)
toxic granule count as well as phagocytic activity and alkaline phosphatase activity ofneutralistic leukocytes were simultaneously determined in 26 benzene labores and 17 normal healthy individuals with no contact to benzene. Results indicated that in benzene contact individuals the phagocytic activity of neutralistic leukocytes appeared well decreased before change of the leukocytic count. Differential count indicated the percentage of neutrophils markedly lowered in benzene -contact cases as compared with no-contact cases
and the reverse appeared to leukocytic count. Such findings apparently agreed with that of Lechelle. No difference of statistical significance was found with reference to toxic granule count and alkaline phosphatase activity. It was concluded thah leukocyte count and phagocytic activity examination in addition may serve as early diagnostic index of chronic benzene poisoning.
