Clinicopathology of ameloblastoma and its relationship with recurrence
Objective: To analyze the clinicopathology of ameloblastoma and its relationship with recurrence. Methods: We included 80 patients with a clinicopathological diagnosis of ameloblastoma in our hospital from Febru-ary 2016 to August 2019
followed up them for 5 months
and then analyzed the relationship between pathologicaltypes and recurrence rate. Results: All the 80 patients completed surgical pathological diagnosis
with 42 cases(52.50%) of conventional type and 38 cases(47.50%) of unicystic type. The age of patients with conventional amelo-blastoma was significantly older than that of patients with unicystic ameloblastoma(t = 13.904
P
<
0.001). The pa-tients with conventional ameloblastoma had a significantly longer disease duration than those with unicystic type(t =24.137
P
<
0.001). The recurrence rate was significantly higher in conventional type than in unicystic type(59.52%vs 34.21%
χ
2
= 5.1261
P = 0.024). Among the 42 cases of conventional ameloblastoma
there were 14 cases(33.33%) with follicular subtype and 28 cases(66.67%) with plexiform subtype. At 5 months of follow-up
there wasno significant difference in the recurrence rate between patients with follicular subtype and plexiform subtype(71.43% vs 64.29%
χ
2
= 0.214
P = 0.643). Conclusion: The recurrence rate is significantly higher in convention-al ameloblastoma than in unicystic ameloblastoma
while it shows no significant difference between the follicularsubtype and plexiform subtype of conventional ameloblastoma. Unicystic ameloblastoma mainly affects adolescentsand exhibits a relatively short course of disease.
