Controversy over the change in the naming of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
The concept of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease was first proposed by Ludwig in 1980 and has been used ever since
which excludes fatty liver disease caused by alcohol and other definite factors for liver damage. However
there are many limitations in the definition and naming of the disease
such as emphasis on drinking and its intake
individual differences in the role of alcohol
and emphasis on eliminating possible pathogenic factors rather than timely weight loss treatment. Ideal naming of the disease should be based on pathophysiological mechanisms and noninvasive diagnostic methods
and therefore
it is necessary to strengthen the research on metabolomics and proteomics
so as to improve disease awareness
prevention
and treatment and guide noninvasive diagnosis and new drug development. This article reviews the current status on the consensus and controversy over the renaming of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
