Clinical effect of acupuncture and massage combined with Western medicine on the treatment of lumbar disc herniation
Objective:To investigate the clinical effect of acupuncture and massage combined with Western medicine in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. Methods:A total of 100 patients with lumbar disc herniation were divided into observation group and control group
with 50 patients in each group. The patients in the control group were treated with ibuprofen sustained-release capsules
and those in the observation group were treated with acupuncture and massage in addition to the treatment in the control group. Clinical outcome was evaluated after 3 months of treatment
and the scores of subjective symptoms and clinical signs
degree of pain
health status
and conditions of lumbar vertebra were evaluated before and after treatment. Results:The observation group had a significantly higher response rate than the control group(94.0% vs 68.0%
P < 0.05). Both groups had significant reductions in the scores of subjective symptoms and clinical signs after treatment
and the observation group had significantly lower scores than the control group after treatment(P < 0.05). Both groups had a significant reduction in Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) score after treatment(P < 0.05)
and the observation group had a significantly lower VAS score than the control group after treatment(P < 0.05). Both groups had significant increases in Japanese Orthopaedic Association score and the scores of each index after treatment
and the observation group had significantly higher scores than the control group(P < 0.05). Both groups had a significant increase in Oswestry Disability Index(ODI)score after treatment
and the observation group had a significantly higher ODI score than the control group after treatment(P < 0.05). Conclusion:Acupuncture and massage combined with Western medicine can relieve the pain of patients with lumbar disc herniation
improve their clinical symptoms and lumbar function
