An epidemiological survey of metabolic syndrome among primary and secondary school teachers in Yuzhong District, Chongqing
Objective To understand the detection rate and distribution characteristics of metabolic syndrome(MS) in a group of primary and secondary school teachers in Yuzhong District
Chongqing. Methods A total of 1 818 primary and secondary school teachers in Yuzhong District
Chongqing
who underwent health checkups at a hospital in Chongqing from August to December 2018 were randomly selected as the study subjects
and the disease distribution and influencing factors of MS were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 statistical software. Results Body mass index(BMI)
waist circumference(WC)
blood pressure
blood glucose
triglyceride(TG)
and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C) levels were higher in male study subjects than in females
and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) levels were lower than in females
and all differences were statistically significant(P<0.05). MS was detected in 255 cases in the study subjects
accounting for 14.03%
and the MS detection rate in men(21.18%) was significantly higher than that in women(11.62%)
and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). Among the study subjects in the youth and middle-aged groups
the MS detection rate in males was significantly higher than that in females(P<0.05)
and the MS detection rate in the elderly group increased significantly with age
and the MS detection rate in the elderly group was significantly higher than that in the middle-aged and youth groups(P<0.05)
but the difference in MS detection rate among the study subjects of different genders in the elderly group was not statistically significant(P>0.05). Conclusion The MS detection rate of primary and secondary school teachers in Chongqing is high
and the detection rate of males is significantly higher than that of females
and the MS detection rate of this group increases significantly with age. Therefore
it is important to increase health education for primary and secondary school teachers
especially for older teachers and middle-aged and young male teachers
to promote healthy lifestyles
and to improve their awareness and level of self-health management for the prevention and treatment of MS.
