Analysis of the main health problems in a physical examination targeting college teachers and their influencing factors
Objective To understand the main health problems and related influencing factors among the faculty members of a university. Methods Convenience sampling was adopted to select 227 cases of serving professional teachers from 3 faculties among 34 faculties that participated in staff physical examination in a university as the study subjects. The questionnaire survey and the data of the physical examination of the study subjects were used to obtain their lifestyle-related health knowledge
related behavioral factors and major health problems
and the influencing factors of the major health problems of the study subjects were analyzed. Results 79.74% of the study subjects’ connotations could correctly understand healthy lifestyle
and 91.63%
87.67% and 69.16% of the study subjects had correct knowledge about sleep
smoking and alcohol consumption
respectively. On the other hand
only nearly half or less than half of the study subjects knew about health knowledge related to diet and exercise
etc. The main health problems detected in the study subjects were
in order of prevalence: dyslipi-demia(37.00%)
elevated blood uric acid(33.63%)
overweight/obesity(32.13%)
elevated blood pressure(13.12%)
and elevated fasting glucose(9.25%). The results of univariate logistic regression analysis showed that gender
age
alcohol consumption
reasonable average daily energy intake and exercise were influencing fac-tors for elevated blood pressure and elevated fasting glucose; gender
age
reasonable average daily energy intake and exercise were influencing factors for dyslipidemia; age
reasonable average daily energy intake and exercise were influential factors for elevated blood uric acid; gender and age were influencing factors for overweight/obesi-ty. The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that that being male(OR=5.19)
age >50 years(OR=9.21)
and unreasonable daily energy intake(OR=3.40) were risk factors for elevated blood pres-sure(P<0.05); 35-50 years(OR=3.21) and >50 years of age(OR=3.28) and unreasonable daily energy intake(OR=2.82) were risk factors for dyslipidemia(P<0.05); alcohol consumption(OR=3.38) and unrea-sonable average daily energy intake(OR =3.04) were risk factors for elevated fasting glucose(P <0.05); age >50 years(OR=3.72)
unreasonable average daily energy intake(OR=5.61) and severe physical inactivity(OR=2.55) were independent risk factors for elevated blood uric acid(P<0.05); being male(OR=5.31) was a risk factor for overweight/obesity(P<0.05). Conclusion The current population of university teachers has good knowledge on the theoretical level of healthy lifestyle
but the health status is not satisfactory
and there is a problem of a gap between knowledge and action. In addition
besides irresistible factors like age and gender
the college teachers should focus on lifestyle interventions in terms of dietary structure and exercise
so as to prevent chronic diseases and improve their health status.
