A comparative analysis of the survey on awareness rate of tuberculosis key messages among the public in Beijing in 2006 and 2015
Objective To compare and analyze the changes of public awareness rate of key messages on tuberculosis(TB) prevention and control in Beijing between two surveys in 2006 and 2015. So as to further promote health education on TB. Methods A systematic multi-stage stratified random sampling was administered. A total of 7 200 and 17 274 residents were selected in 2006 and 2015
respectively. All of the subjects were interviewed face-to-face with the standard questionnaire designed by the expert group of the Awareness Survey through literature search and expert consultation. In 2006 and 2015
7 164 and 16 519 valid questionnaires were collected respectively. Questionnaire surveys were carried out to take the basic demographic characteristics
the awareness rate of key TB messages and the main channel for the subjects to get TB knowledge and information. The questionnaire of 15-64-year-old subjects was randomly selected according to the age composition of the resident population. The data of 2 676 questionnaires in 2006 and 9 298 questionnaires in 2015 were analyzed by SAS 9.2 statistical analysis system. Results The results of two surveys showed that
public awareness rates of TB prevention and control
such as ’a major infectious disease’ ’ transmission route’ ’suspicious symptoms’ ’choice of medical institutions’ ’cure or not’ ’preferential policy’ ’preventive measures’ and ’non discrimination’ in 2015 were 76.29%
79.25%
92.91%
97.82%
67.33%
38.63%
63.86%
53.80%
respectively
which were significantly higher than 48.09%
72.80 %
19.73 %
68.09%
15.55 %
30.08 %
61.32%
14.80% in 2006(all P<0.05). In 2015
about 54.61% subjects knew all of the three key messages such as ’transmission route’ ’suspicious symptoms’ ’cure or not’
it’s substantially increased compared with the rate of 2.65% in 2006(P<0.05). The general awareness rate was 79.83% in 2015
which was significantly higher han the rate of 36.02% in 2006(P<0.05). In 2015
the main channels for the subjects to get knowledge and information were more professional
such as TV(57.15%)
health lectures(42.58%)
health materials(41.72%) and internet(36.38%). Conclusions The public awareness rate of core information on tuberculosis prevention and control was substantially increased from 2006 to 2015 in Beijing. While it was lower than the requirement of the National TB Control Programme. Health education on TB prevention knowledge should be strengthened and emphasized for the key groups and population.
