Effects of standardized skin management on radiation-induced skin reactions and quality of life in patients receiving radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Objective To investigate the effects of standardized skin management on radiation-induced skin reac-tions and quality of life among patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma undergoing radiotherapy. Methods A to-tal of 146 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated with radiotherapy from March 2017 to March 2019 in a hospital in Henan Province were selected as the study subjects. The subjects were divided into a study group and a control group with 73 patients in each group using a random number table. Patients in the control group were given routine nursing interventions
while patients in the study group were given standardized skin management on the basis of the control group. The Radiation Therapy Oncology Group(RTOG) classification
lesion-symp-tom(pruritus
skin ulceration) scores
Core Quality of Life Questionnaire(QLQ-C30) scores before and after the intervention as well as the effects of skin care were compared between the two groups. Results The total ef-fective rate of skin care in the study group was 84.93%(62/73)
which was higher than the 71.23%(52/73) in the control group
and the difference was statistically significant(χ2=4.002
P<0.05). Before the nursing in-tervention
the RTOG classification of the 2 groups of patients was compared
and the difference was not statisti-cally significant(u=0.497
P>0.05); after the nursing intervention
the RTOG classification of the patients in the study group was better than before the intervention
and the difference was statistically significant(u=5.349
P<0.05); before and after the nursing intervention
the RTOG classification of the patients in the con-trol group was compared
and the difference was not statistically significant(u=1.490
P>0.05); the RTOG classification of the patients in the study group was better than that in the control group after the nursing inter-vention
and the difference was statistically significant(u=4.426
P<0.05). Before the nursing intervention
the difference in the pruritus and skin ulceration scores in the two groups was not statistically significant(P>0.05); after the nursing intervention
the pruritus and skin ulceration scores in both groups were lower than be-fore the nursing intervention
and those in the study group were lower than those in the control group
with sta-tistically significant differences(P<0.05). After the nursing intervention
the QLQ-C30 scores in both groups were lower than before the nursing intervention
and those in the study group were lower than those in the con-trol group
with statistically significant differences(P <0.05). Conclusion Standardized skin management
when applied to nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients receiving radiotherapy
helps to improve the effectiveness of skin care
reduce the symptoms of radiation-induced skin reactions and lesions
and improves patients’ quality of life.
