Effect of exercise therapy combined with acupuncture on recovery of limb functions in patients with Green-Barré syndrome
Objective To investigate the effect of exercise therapy combined with acupuncture on the recovery of limb functions in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome(GBS). Methods Eighty-four patients with GBS treated in a hospital in Liaoning Province from May 2017 to April 2019 were selected and divided into a study group and a control group using a random number table
with 42 patients in each group. Patients in the control group were treated with exercise therapy
patients in the study group were treated with acupuncture on the basis of the con-trol group
and patients in the 2 groups were treated for 1 month. The limb functions
activities of daily living and tibial nerve and median nerve functions of the 2 groups of patients were compared before and after the treat-ment. Results Before treatment
the differences in scores for each dimension of the Fugl-Meyer Scale(FMA) between the 2 groups were not statistically significant(P>0.05); after treatment
the scores in upper limb mo-tor function and lower limb motor function in FMA of both groups were higher than before treatment
and the scores of the study group were higher than those of the control group
and the differences were statistically signif-icant(P<0.05). Before treatment
the differences in the scores of each dimension of ADL of the 2 groups were not statistically significant(P>0.05); after treatment
the scores of instrumental and somatic daily living ability in ADL of the 2 groups were lower than those before treatment
and those of the study group were lower than those of the control group
and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05). Before treatment
the differences between the 2 groups in the levels of motor conduction velocity(MCV) and sensory conduction veloci-ty(SCV) of tibial nerve and median nerve were not statistically significant(P>0.05); after treatment
the lev-els of MCV and SCV of tibial nerve and median nerve were higher than those before treatment
and those in the study group was higher than those in the control group
and the differences were statistically significant(P < 0.05). Conclusion Exercise therapy combined with acupuncture can improve limb functions and neurological functions of GBS patients and improve their daily life activities. Hence it is beneficial to their prognosis and reha-bilitation.
