Objective To assess the postnatal depression

breastfeeding self-efficacy and newborn care ability of adolescent mothers in Chongqing

and to analyze the potential factors that may affect their breastfeeding self-efficacy and newborn care ability.Methods A total of 59 women who underwent postpartum follow-up visits to two 3-A hospitals and 3 maternal and child health centers in Chongqing from February 2017 to June 2018 were selected.Subjects were divided into an adolescent group（age 16 to 19 years old

n=28）and an adult group（age≥20 years old

n=31）.Both groups were surveyed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale（EPDS）

the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale（BSES）

and the Newborn Care Ability Questionnaire（NCAQ）

and the survey data were statistically analyzed.Result The total scores of EPDS and scores for emotional loss

anxiety and depression in adolescent group were（15.14±3.70）

（2.75±1.55）

（7.29±1.57）and（5.11±1.64）

respectively

all significantly higher than those in the adult group

which were（11.51±4.23）

（1.80±1.49）

（5.84±1.75）and（2.87±2.01）

respectively（P<0.05）.The total detection rate of depression in adolescent group（92.8%）was also significantly higher than that in adult group（64.5%）（P<0.05）.The total scores of BSES and scores for breastfeeding skills and mental activities in adolescent group were（73.57±14.12）

（36.03±8.01）and（37.56±6.85）

respectively

all significantly lower than those in adult group

which were（84.41±16.64）

（42.29±8.52）and（42.13±8.48）

respectively（P<0.05）.The total scores of NCAQ and scores for nursing knowledge

care skills and care attitudes in adolescent group were（63.00±22.67）

（33.75±15.97）

（20.68±6.19）and（8.57±2.60）respectively

all lower than those in adult group

which were（93.48±21.18）

（54.74±13.36）

（28.10±6.94）and（10.65±3.46）

respectively（P<0.05）.Correlation analysis showed that the EPDS scores in adolescent were negatively correlated with BSES and NCAQ scores（P=0.000）.Regression analysis showed that EPDS scores had significant predictive effects on breastfeeding self-efficacy and newborn care ability in adolescent group（P<0.05）.Conclusion Postnatal depression is widespread in adolescent mothers

and their breastfeeding self-efficacy and newborn care ability are lower than usual.Their postnatal depression can predict the low breastfeeding self-efficacy and newborn care ability to a certain extent.
