Cost-effectiveness analysis of FOLFOX versus FOLFIRI chemotherapy regimens in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer
Objective To compare the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of FOLFOX versus FOLFIRI chemotherapy regimens in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer(mCRC).Methods Eighty patients with mCRC who were treated at the Department of Oncology of a Henan hospital between July 2015 and December 2017 were included in this study.Based on a random number table
patients were allocated to receive the FOLFOX regimen(trial group
n=42)or the FOLFIRI regimen(control group
n=38)for 56 consecutive days.The efficacy
incidence of adverse events
and cost-effectiveness were assessed and compared between the two groups.Results The total response rate in the trial group was higher than that of the control group
but the difference was not statistically significant(42.8% vs.39.5%
P>0.05).At day 1 and day 14
the proportions of CD3+
CD4+and CD8+T cells generally remained unchanged from baseline values and were similar between the two groups(P>0.05).The proportions of patients whose Karnofsky performance score(KPS)increased
remained stable
or decreased were also similar between the two groups(P>0.05).The incidences of both myelosuppression and diarrhea were significantly lower in the trial group than those of the control group(P<0.05).Compared with the control group
the total cost was lower in the trial group.The C/E ratio of the FOLFOX regimen was lower than that of the FOLFIRI regimen;as compared with the FOLFOX regimen
the incremental cost per each day of progression-free survival(PFS)was RMB 61.8 yuan in the control group.In terms of both medical insurance and out-of-pocket expenditures
the C/E ratios of the FOLFOX regimen were lower than those of the FOLFIRI regimen;as compared with the FOLFOX regimen
the incremental medical insurance and out-of-pocket expenditures per each day of PFS were RMB 56.1 yuan and RMB 8.1 yuan in the control group
respectively.Conclusion Compared with the FOLFIRI chemotherapy regimen
the FOLFOX regimen is more cost-effective in treating mCRC
with a lower incidence of adverse reactions and superior economic results.
