Objective To investigate the current status of tobacco use and its influential factors among University Town students in Rizhao

Shandong Province

so as to provide scientific evidence for smoking control strategies implemented in Rizhao universities.Methods Based on the method of stratified random sampling

a total of2 977 university students from 6 universities in Rizhao University Town participated in this survey.The"Tobacco Use Monitoring Questionnaire for School Populations in Rizhao"was used for the survey.Results The overall smoking rate was 11.25%（335/2 977）

with significantly higher rates in boys（versus girls）

students from urban areas（versus those rural areas）

students graduated from technical secondary schools（versus those from normal high schools）

and students without daily life goals（versus those with daily life goals）（all P<0.05）.The smoking rate also varied significantly with monthly living expenses

parental smoking status

smoking status of surrounding peers

and alcohol consumption（P<0.05）;frequent drinkers were more likely to smoke than occasional drinkers or those who did not drink at all.38.50% of smokers reported less than 5 cigarettes per day

34.33% reported a smoking history of 4-5 years

53.13%reported smoking while playing electronic games

and51.04%reported smoking when hanging out with their friends.85.67% of smokers and 82.02% of non-smokers knew the tobacco control policies of their schools;88.66% of smokers and 57.76% of non-smokers supported smoke-free campus

but some students had an indifferent attitude towards smoking control activities.Smokers and non-smokers had significantly different attitudes towards tobacco control activities（P <0.05）.Conclusion Most students in Rizhao University Town support tobacco control activities at their schools

however

smoking still exists in these campuses.Therefore

it is important for universities to reinforce smoking control management

enhance publicity and education

with a particular focus on boys

those without daily life goals

as well as frequent drinkers.
